In today's class we watched a short film about a disabled man called the butterfly circus. It was made by Joshua Weigel in 2009 and is a renowned short film about the travels of a circus called the butterfly circus, just as the film-name. The plot is placed in the America around the 1930’s. This happens during a grim part of American history, just after the financial crisis when the stock market crashed and left the American economy crippled.

A small circus is travelling around the US, performing their show and lifting the spirits of their audience along the way.

During their travels between their shows, they discover e circus that have a carnival sideshow. In this show the showman of the butterfly circus discovers a very special man, a man without limbs. The showman is amazed over this limbless man, but the limbless man, called will react with hatred toward the showman in confusion. Just after the showman had left, will discovers what he had just done and flees the sideshow tent. He somehow gets into one of the butterfly circuses cars and hides until they drive away from the circus. Will is welcomed with open arms by the Showman and his people and he joins them on their travels across America. During this travel, will gets constantly reminded that he is less worth than everyone because his shortage of limbs, but the showman refuses to agree with him and his shortages. This over time encourages will to try things he had never dreamed of doing, such as swimming and even diving! In the end will sees that he was only holding himself back in belief that he was not good enough?

I think this is an inspiring movie that is filled with hope and faith that you can do whatever you want. You just have to believe in yourself. Honestly I can’t find anything wrong or bad in any way with this movie. I had chills all over the body during the movie and for me, which equals a good and somewhat emotional movie. I am a little embarrassed to say that I actually felt some tears coming, but bravely held them back. After all I can’t cry during a short film. For me this film just simply gives me hope and reinforces my belief that anything is possible, you just have to believe enough in it and work hard enough. Then you will be able to do anything.
